Business/Liberal Arts Minor

Many IE students choose Industrial Engineering because of its technical aspect, but also because it incorporates many business-related aspects as well. One minor that may be interest to IE students to further develop these business-related skills is the Business/Liberal Arts minor. Although the minor requires 25 credits, the outline below indicates that with proper planning, the minor can be obtained with much fewer credits

An undergraduate industrial engineering student who desires to obtain a Business/Liberal Arts minor must satisfy that minor’s requirements as given in the current Undergraduate Degree Program Bulletin. For more information about the Business/Liberal Arts Minor please visit the College of Liberal Arts.

Only courses in which the student earns a C or better may be counted toward fulfillment of the requirements for the minor.

A student who plans his/her course selections well can obtain the Business/Liberal Arts minor for much fewer than the 25-26 credits required. A recommended coursework plan would be as follows:

  1. Take ECON 2 (3) to satisfy the BSIE degree’s General Education requirement in Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  2. IE 425(3) is a required course for the BSIE degree.
  3. IE 433(3) is a specialization track elective in any track.
  4. Several courses listed for the minor can be used towards the GA/GH/GS requirements; such as Phil 119 or the ECON courses listed(e.g. a student can complete a 3-6-9 option using Phil 119 as a GH, and ECON 2 + 6 other ECON (GS) credits towards 9 credits of GS. A student must be careful to meet the US and IL requirements with the remaining general education courses since most, if not all, of the courses listed above do not satisfy the US and IL requirement.
  5. A student who successfully completes the requirements for the Business/Liberal Arts minor automatically satisfies 3 credits in the 'choose 6 credits' category listed in the 4th semester of our curriculum plan.

It is recommended that an IE student interested in the Business/Liberal Arts minor make an appointment to see the Professor-in-charge of the minor, currently Dr. Michael Berkman, or the advisor, Melissa Gayman (202 Pond), to ensure proper planning.
