Undergraduate Program Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a copy of my degree audit?

Students may request a copy of their degree audit by going into https://eLion.psu.edu. The first page of the degree audit contains the IE students major GPA (IE courses only). Questions about the degree audit should be referred to the student's advisor (also found on the first page of the audit).

Is it important that I take the required prerequisite courses before registering for an IE course?

Students should check the prerequisites before registering for an IE class. The prerequisites are listed in the Baccalaureate Degree Programs Bulletin and on the IE web page . During the first week of each semester, each IE instructor receives a list of students in his/her class who have not taken the prerequisites for that class. The instructor has the right to disenroll a student who does not have the proper prerequisites. In some cases the student has taken an equivalent course either at Penn State or at another university. It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor if he/she has taken an equivalent course.

How do find out which courses will count toward my AHS requirements?

As part of the General Education requirements, students are required to take six credits each in the Arts, Humanities, and Social, and Behavioral Sciences. One of the courses must be classified as Intercultural and International Competence or GI (formerly diversity focus [DF]). All of the courses from which to choose are listed in the General Education in the Curriculum booklet. Courses designated as GI or DF should also be designated as GA for Arts, GH for Humanities, or GS for Social Sciences in order for them to count toward one of the requirements. The course that satisfies the diversity focus requirement will have either a GI or DF designation. The AHS courses offered for a particular semester can be found on the web http://soc.our.psu.edu/main_search.cfm

What is the 9-6-3 option?

A student may prefer to take nine credits in one of the knowledge domains (either Arts, Humanities, or Social and Behavioral Sciences), six credits in another, and three credits in the third domain. Students taking the 9-6-3 option must complete a petition form (from the IE office) in order to have their degree audit updated.

How can I fulfill the IE elective requirements?

The IE web page and the IE Handbook list courses that are acceptable as IE electives (Science, Senior, Design, and Technical). In addition, IE 497 (or one-semester title) courses with an attached suffix are offered each semester to be used as electives. The IE office keeps copies of current course offerings, and the Senior, Design and Technical Electives are identified with S, D, and T. A course designated as a Senior Elective or a course designated as a Design Elective may be used to satisfy the Technical Elective requirement. Also, a course designated as a Design Elective may be used to satisfy the Senior Elective requirement. However, a Senior Elective may never be used to satisfy the Design Elective requirement. The same course MAY NOT be used to satisfy two of the electives. Students need to take twelve credits to fulfill the Science, Senior, Design and Technical Electives.
