The WCIE award was established to recognize excellence in the undergraduate capstone design project. The department embraces the elements of the World-Class Engineer developed by the Leonhard Center and believes these attributes are to be exhibited by students in all aspects of their educational experience. The IE480W capstone course represents the culmination of the curriculum and provides opportunity for students. Each semester project teams are evaluated, based on the World-Class Engineer attributes listed below, as exhibited in the project report, presentations and posters.

Aware of the World
Solidly Grounded
Technically Broad
Effective in Group Operations
Versatile and Innovative
Customer Oriented

Judging is performed by faculty and industry representatives according to the degree to which the project and team exhibits attributes of World-Class Industrial Engineering.
