IE alum to give 2009 COE commencement address
Spring 2009 commencement for College of Engineering students will be held on May 15 at 8 pm at the Bryce Jordan Center.
This year's commencement speaker is Greg Lucier (IE '86). Lucier serves as chief executive officer of Life Technologies and chairman of the company's board of directors. Previously he served as chairman and chief executive officer of Invitrogen Corporation, which merged with Applied Biosystems in November 2008 to form Life Technologies. The company is one of the largest providers of systems, biological reagents, and services supplying scientists around the world in every way that life science technologies are applied. Life Technologies aims to improve the human condition by fostering basic research, accelerating drug discovery and development, and advancing scientific exploration in areas such as regenerative science, molecular diagnostics, agricultural and environmental research, and 21st-century forensics.
Lucier received the 2006 Penn State College of Engineers World-Class Engineer Alumni Award. Established by the Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education's advisory board, the award honors the achievements of a Penn State engineering graduate in early or midcareer who is worldly, versatile, technically broad, and effective in team and leadership roles.
