2007 - Dr. Ravi Ravindran edited Operations Research and Management Science Handbook. CRC Press Publishers released a new book edited by Dr. Ravi Ravindran. The book "Operations Research and Management Science Handbook" was released December 2007.

2006 - Dr. Soundar Tirupatikumara has been appointed to the Allen E. Pearce/Allen M. Pearce Professorhip in The Harold & Inge Marcus Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering beginning November 1, 2006 for a five-year term.
2006 - Dr. Enrique del Castillo has been elected editor-in-chief of the Journal of Quality Technology (JQT).
One of the premier journals for Applied Statistics in Industry, JQT has consistently ranked among the top Industrial Engineering, Operations Research and Statistics journals in the last few years, according to ISI's Citation Index. A publication of the American Society of Quality (ASQ), JQT currently ranks as 2nd out of 33 IE journals, 9th out of 56 OR journals, and 20th out of 77 Statistics journals. Dr. Castillo's term as editor will extend thorough 2009.

2005 - Congratulations to Nathan Gnanasambandam and Seokcheon Lee, IE graduate students, along with Dr. Soundar Kumara and Dr. Natarajan Gautam, who were recently awarded the 2005 IERC Best Paper Award in Computer and Information Systems. This award, which will be presented on May 15 at the IIE Annual Conference, Honors and Awards Banquet, was for their work entitled "A framework for performance control of distributed autonomous agents".

2005 - The journal Networks & Spatial Economics, whose Editor-In-Chief is Terry Friesz, Marcus Chaired Professor of Industrial Engineering, has recently been indexed/abstracted in ISI's Science Citation Index Expanded, only 3 years after its founding. Seldom does a new journal get indexed by ISI prior to the end of its fifth year. Springer Europe estimates the mean time to ISI indexing to be between 8 and 10 years. Such early inclusion in ISI's Science Citation Index Expanded is a powerful statement about the quality of the entire Networks & Spatial Economics Editorial Board and the standards of excellence it has enforced.
2005 - Congratulations to Dr. Timothy Simpson who is scheduled to receive the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) 2005 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award at the SAE World Congress on Apr. 12 in Detroit, MI. The award recognizes outstanding young engineering educators who have between three and ten years of full-time faculty experience. Recipients are recognized for their contributions to teaching, curriculum development, professional development, and research, as well as their leadership in student activities and participation in engineering society activities.
2004 - Dr. Andris Freivalds recently authored the textbook, "Biomechanics of the Upper Limbs, Mechanics, Modeling and Musculoskeletal Disorders", an engineering oriented book focusing on upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders. The book discusses currently used models of the upper extremities, explores tools and techniques to assess risk for incurring musculoskeletal injuries, and provides detailed anatomic descriptions of the hand and disorders affecting it. 2004 - The prestigious Armand V. Feigenbaum Medal was awarded to Dr. Harriet Black Nembhard, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Penn State University. The medal is named for the quality pioneer who is best known as the originator of Total Quality Control, the approach to quality and profitability that has influenced management strategy for business growth in today's competitive markets. The medal is presented each year to a young quality professional who has displayed outstanding characteristics of leadership, professionalism, and potential in the field of quality through achievement of significant benefit to mankind.

2004 - Dr. Terry Friesz was recently cited (Papers in Regional Science, 2004) among the key intellectual leaders in the development of regional science as a discipline. Dr. Friesz is ranked ninth among the all-time intellectual leaders currently active. The article also identifies Dr. Friesz as having the most widely cited journal article in 1983 and 1984, and as the eighth most cited scholar during the period of 1977-1989.
2004 - Dr. Enrique del Castillo was recently appointed as a technical editor of Technometrics. Technometrics is a quarterly journal that focuses on statistical methods for the physical, chemical, and engineering sciences. It is considered one of the top journals in Engineering Statistics with articles describing new techniques and applications for research, development, design, and performance improvement. In addition to his work with Technometrics, Dr. Castillo is also an associate editor for IIE Transactions and the Journal of Quality Technology.
2004 - Dr. Harriet Nembhard was recently awarded the Lloyd S. Nelson Award from the JQT (Journal of Quality Technology) Editorial Review Board. The Lloyd S. Nelson Award recognizes the article in the most recent volume of JQT that had the "greatest immediate impact to practitioners." The 2003 JQT articles were reviewed based upon their innovative adaptation of traditional methods and their potential for everyday practicality and Dr. Nembhard's article was selected.
Dr. Nembhard's article, co-authored by Rene Valverde-Ventura, "Integrating Experimental Design and Statistical Control for Quality Improvement" was the first to receive the prestigious Nelson Award. Please join the IE department in congratulating Dr. Nembhard.
2003 - Dr. Soundar Kumara was selected to receive the title of Distinguished Professor, based on his "exceptional record of teaching, research, and service."
2003 - Dr. Natarajan Gautam received the 2003 PSES Outstanding Teaching Award which recognizes and rewards outstanding Engineering educators for excellence in teaching and for contributions to the art of teaching. This teaching award was established to confer honor on individuals whose inspiration and contributions to learning are truly memorable.
2003 - R. A. "Ravi" Ravindran was awarded the Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, India during the 2003-2004 academic year. Dr. Ravindran will give lectures on multiple criteria optimization models to supply chain management. He is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 140 countries for the 2003-2004 academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program.
2003 - Dr. Natarajan Gautam, associate professor of industrial engineering, along with colleagues Dr. Ageliki Elefteriadou (associate professor of civil engineering) and Dr. Peggy Johnson (professor of civil engineering) received an award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) towards the program: Partnership for Exploratory Basic Research on Information and Communications Systems for Surface Transportation (ICSST). The two-year grant made through the NSF's highly competitive ICSST program, was awarded in support of multi-disciplinary research conducted by Drs. Elefteriadou, Gautam and Johnson for the project: "Travel Time Route Reliability."

The two-year grant made through the NSF's highly competitive ITR program, was awarded in support of multi-disciplinary research conducted by Drs. Sivasubramaniam, Gautam and Wang for the project: "ITR: Data-driven Autonomic Performance Modulation for Servers."

Shooter (Mechanical Engineering, Bucknell University), Dr. Janis P. Terpenny (Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, University of Massachusetts Amherst), and Dr. Robert B. Stone (Basic Engineering, University of Missouri-Rolla) received an award from the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate - Information and Intelligent Systems Division of the National Science Foundation (NSF), under the Information Technology Research Medium Size Grants.
2003 - Dr. Terry Friesz, Harold and Inge Marcus Chaired Professor of Industrial Engineering, has received an $83,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to conduct a workshop on the Emergence of the Field of Network Science and its Application to the Study of Infrastructure. The workshop will focus on adapting the types of mathematical analyses innovated in network science to the development of theories explaining the structure and complexity of infrastructure networks such roads, telecommunications systems, power distribution networks, water distribution networks and financial networks and will emphasize the role of infrastructure network topology in industrial growth and economic vulnerability.

2002 - Professor Soundar R. T. Kumara was awarded a 2002 Faculty Scholar Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering. Dr. Kumara was honored by the University for his fundamental contributions to the field of intelligent systems.
2002 - Associate Professor Enrique del Castillo's new book Statistical Process Adjustment for Quality Control was published in March 2002 by John Wiley & Sons in their prestigious "Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics." A resource for students, industrial engineers, and applied statisticians, the 384-page hardback book is a comprehensive presentation of control theory at the elementary level.
2002 - The IME, Inc. faculty team has received a General Electric Learning Excellence Award in recognition of its innovative work in integrating product development and entrepreneurship into the undergraduate IME curriculum. The $5,000 award to Drs. Joshi, Lehtihet, Medeiros, Simpson, and Wysk was announced by the Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education on April 18, 2002.

2001 - Associate Professor Enrique del Castillo received the 2001 IIE Transactions Award (Focused Issue, Quality and Reliability Engineering) for his paper Long Run and Transient Analysis of a Double WEMA Feedback Controller (2000). IIE Transactions, published monthly by the Institute of Industrial Engineers, is a refereed journal dedicated to the publication of original research.
2001 - Professor Paul H. Cohen received the the Institute of Industrial Engineering's (IIE) Fellow Award, its highest classification of IIE membership. This award recognizes outstanding members who have made significant, nationally recognized contributions to industrial engineering.
