2008 - Paul Lynch, IE Graduate Student, is a 2008 recipient of a national Alpha Pi Mu scholarship, one of only 9 students nationwide. This is the SECOND time Paul has received a national Alpha Pi Mu scholarship, the previous one earned in his undergraduate days. He is our only student in the past 20 years (and perhaps longer) to have received this honor. Congratulations Paul!
2008 - Three PSU IME students received scholarships from the Material Handling Education Foundation for the 2008-2009 academic year. Graduate Student, Paul Lynch, has been awarded $9,000, the largest amount ever given. Undergraduate student Vincent Slaugh and Graduate Student Gabriel Burnett, were also awarded scholarships, receiving $5,000 and $4,000 respectively.

2006 - Melanie DeGrano, a doctoral student in IE, won second prize in the Interactive Presentations Sessions held on November 6th and 7th at the INFORMS Conference in Pittsbugh, PA. During the Interactive Presentation Sessions, researchers, practitioners and students shared their work in Operations Research/Management Science through poster displays, laptop demonstrations or other creative formats.

2006 - IE Senior Stephanie Cubellis, was selected as the 2006 Jolle Award recipient for Women in Engineering Leadership. A committee of engineering faculty, staff and the Joelle sponsor selected her for this honor from a competitive pool of outstanding candidtates. Stephanie's years of sustained leadership and contributions to the college, to Penn State and to the community are exemplary. The Joelle Award for Women in Engineering Leadership recognizes outstanding contributions by a woman student to the College of Engineering. Stephanie will be recognized at the Engineering Diversity Advisory Board Dinner on Monday, April 24.

2005 - Congratulations to Katrina Hoch and Nathaniel who have been selected to receive the inagural Invitrogen Honors Scholarship for the 2005-2006 academic year. This scholarship, established by Invitrogen Corporation, recognizes outstanding industrial engineering students enrolled in the honors program. This program between the department and the Honors College is the first of it's kind, and was the idea of Greg Lucier, an IE alumni and CEO of Invitrogen. Greg was a member of the honors program while at Penn State and went on to receive his MBA from Harvard University.
2005 - Congratulations to Nathan Gnanasambandam and Seokcheon Lee, IE graduate students, along with Dr. Soundar Kumara and Dr. Natarajan Gautam, who were recently awarded the 2005 IERC Best Paper Award in Computer and Information Systems. This award, which will be presented on May 15 at the IIE Annual Conference, Honors and Awards Banquet, was for their work entitled "A framework for performance control of distributed autonomous agents".

2005 - Kyungjin Rachel Lee will represent the IE department as the Spring 2005 Commencement Student Marshal. Engineering student marshals are chosen for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions to engineering student life. Rachel is ranked 1st out of 59 industrial engineering students receiving degrees on May 13, 2005. Rachel has been active in many societies and was the recipient of the Paul Morrow Endowed Scholarship and the Harold and Inge Marcus Industrial Manufacturing Scholarship. After graduation, Rachel plans to attend the University of California at Berkeley to pursue a graduate degree. She is the daughter of Dong Woo Lee and Mee Jee Kim. 2005 - Hari Thadakamalla has been selected to receive the NRW Undergraduate Science Award 2004, in the Production Engineering and Logistics category. This award, given by the International NRW Graduate School in Germany (Dusseldorf), was won for Hari's work entitled "Survivability of Multi-agent based Supply Networks: A Topological perspective". Hari is currently pursuing his IE graduate degree under the supervision of Dr. Soundar Kumara. The award and a monetary prize will be officially presented to Hari in a ceremony which is to take place in the Ministry for Education and Research in Düsseldorf, Germany.
2004 - Justin Sherrock, an industrial engineering student in The Pennsylvania State University College of Engineering received the 2003-2004 Dr. James Slick Cooperative Education Student of the Year Award from the Engineering Cooperative Education and Internship Office.
Justin participated in a summer 2004 co-op experience at Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems in Piscataway, NJ. At Johnson & Johnson , Justin worked on examining department metrics. He successfully transformed a 10-20 hour-per-month process to a 30-minute process. He partnered with senior analysts to develop mechanisms to capture and analyze customer feedback, supported the implementation of a new computer-telephone interface, and provided analyses and recommendations to the Order Management Center Leadership Team.
Justin was selected, by The Penn State Engineering Society members, from a nominee pool of 29 candidates. This award, included a $1,000 scholarship from the Engineering Cooperative Education and Internship Program.
2004 - Please join the IE Department in congratulating IE Ph. D student, Ajay Natarajan, who was recently named "Best Outgoing Intern" by General Electric. Ajay spent 2 ½ months this summer interning in the John F. Welch Technology Centre at GE in Bangalore, India. While at GE, he worked in the area of Demand Management. Ajay was selected, from a group of talented interns, for his dedication and exceptional work. Ajay will be presented with a certificate and gift check in recognition of this honor.

2004 - Graduating senior Jarrod J. Sharpe has been chosen to represent his class and the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering as student marshal at Penn State's Spring 2002 commencement to be held May 10. He will be accompanied by faculty marshal Andris Freivalds, professor of industrial engineering.
2004 - Kimberly Barron will represent the IE department as the Spring 2004 Commencement Student Marshall. While at Penn State, Kimberly has earned a minor in Business/Liberal Arts and Statistics. Kimberly has been active in many societies, served on a variety of committees, and has been the recipient of several prestigious awards and scholarships. After graduation, Kimberly will be employed by Accenture, located in Philadelphia, PA.

2003 - Travis Nichols, was awareded the 2002-2003 John W. Oswald Award. This award, established in 1983 by the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Leadership Society, annually recognizes graduating seniors who have provided outstanding leadership in at least one of several areas of activity at the University.
2003 - Paul Lynch received a 2002-2003 Alpha Pi Mu National Award of Excellence. This award, which is presented to only 10 students nationwide, is awarded to outstanding Alpha Pi Mu members. The award recognize students for outstanding scholarship, leadership, character, ethnicality and contribution to education in the field of Industrial Engineering.
2003 - Jason Donohue was selected by the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society as the 2003 recipient of the PSES Student Service Award. This award is given annually to recongnize engineering students who exemplify exceptional leadership qualities and have contributed significantly to the betterment of Penn State andlocal, state and national organizations.
2003 - Lauren Hertel was the recipient of the 2002-2003 Outstanding TA Award. Lauren was selected from a pool of four candidates and was selected based on her outstanding service and support to faculty and students. Lauren served as teaching assistant to Dr. Leah Newman's IE 408W Human Factors Engineering course. According to Dr. Newman "Lauren wasone o the best teaching assistants with whom I have ever had the pleasure to work".
2003 - Claire Martin received the 2003 Joelle Award for Women in Engineering Leadership. The Joelle Award recognizes outstanding contributions by a woman student in the College of Engineering. Competition for this award was intense. Claire was one of 13 nominees, four of which were Industrial Engineering students.
2003 - Nicholas Hoogewerff was one of two students in the United States to receive a Wayne Kay Co-op Scholarship from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. This award is annually given to students enrolled in a manufacturing engineering or technology co-op program with outstanding academic performance.

2002 - Richard Pitts, Jr., Ph.D. candidate, has been awarded an Office of Naval Research/Historically Black Engineering College Future Faculty Fellowship. The highly competitive fellowship encourages qualified doctoral students to become faculty at one of the Historically Black Engineering Colleges.
2002 - Amber D. Lehrman, a master's and Ph.D. candidate, has been awarded a three-year National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. She is one of 60 students nationally who received the award in the category of "Electrical, Computer, and Industrial Engineering"; the NSF offered a total of only 900 new three-year fellowships in 2002, chosen from a pool of 6,500 applications.
2002 - An IME student team, led by faculty advisor Dr. Deborah J. Medeiros, won second place in the 2001-2002 College-Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE) and Modern Material Handling National Student Material Handling Design Competition. The students--Trevor Murcko, John Rudy, Jarrod Sharpe, and Chris Turnbull--competed against submissions from 10 other universities. Their challenge was to design a distribution center for an athletic footwear company that distributes products to its own retail stores and sells to consumers over the web.
